How to move Funding Choices messages from AdSense to AdManager/GAM

You may have used Funding Choices consent messages with AdSense or another Google product, and now you want to configure Funding Choices in GAM. Before the messages can be migrated, the system that currently hosts the consent banners must first relinquish control of consent messaging. Simply removing the consent messages from Privacy & Messaging isn’t sufficient. These steps clarify Google’s documentation about this process, and will help deactivate Funding Choices in the previous system so it can be configured in AdManager.

Funding Choices consent messages could be configured in any of these products. The deactivation process should be the same for any active system.

• Ad Manger/AdSense/AdMob
• Google Tag Manager
• Google Analytics
• DV360 & Google Ads

Identify the Current Host Product

You must determine which of the above products hosts the current consent banners. You must be an Administrator in AdManager to perform the following actions:

1. Login to AdManager
2. Click on Privacy & Messaging
3. Click the “Gear” icon under European Regulation
4. Click the “Messages” tab
5. Click to Create a New Message for a Site
6. Click “Select Sites” at the top right of the Message Editor

You will be presented with a list of properties. The property you wish to move should be unavailable with a message like:

This site is managed in AdSense. Go to AdSense to make changes.

And the “Host” column will indicate which product is currently hosting the consent banners. The next steps must be done in that product.

Unlink Current Host

You must determine which product hosts the current consent banners, and login there with Administrator permissions:

1. Click on Privacy & Messaging
2. Click the “Gear” icon under US Privacy OR European Regulation (It doesn’t actually matter which)
3. Click the “Messages” tab
4. Remove any existing messages, if any
5. Click to Create a New Message for a Site
6. Click “Select Sites” at the top right of the Message Editor
7. In the “Host” column, hover over “AdSense” (Or whatever the product name is) and click Remove site host
8. Click Next, then Confirm
9. Cancel out of the interface with the X at the top left, then Back arrow at the top left again, without saving.

Funding Choices has now been unlinked from the old product, and can be configured in AdManager or elsewhere.
