Why upgrade

• Advally can add or remove one user group for every member who matches a filter, and undo it. Until now a board-wide group change was a hand-written script run over SSH. This is for Advally's own maintenance (for example, putting members back in the Registered group after a migration). Nothing changes on your board until Advally runs one.

What you will see

Nothing in the forum or the admin control panel. While a change runs, Tools > Jobs shows "Advally bulk user groups".

How it works

• Every change is counted first, without writing anything.
• The change runs as a XenForo job, a batch of members at a time, and keeps a list of every member it changed.
• An added group goes through XenForo's own user-group change records, the same ones user upgrades use. Undoing the change takes away only what it added. A member who also has the group from an upgrade keeps it.
• A removed group is never taken from a member who holds it through an upgrade or promotion.
• Permissions are rebuilt when the change finishes.

Cancelling a run

A run cancelled from the admin control panel can be undone with undo_run_id. The undo counts the members it will restore from the board's own records, so a run stopped partway is undone in full.

What the upgrade does to your database

Nothing. No tables, options or templates change. A change keeps its record in internal_data/advally/bulk_groups/.

Rollback

Restore the add-on directory from the snapshot you took before upgrading, then run php cmd.php xf-addon:upgrade Advally/Advertising. A change already made stays made; undo it before rolling back.

Why upgrade

• Run Advally on some forums and another ad partner on the rest. A new setting, Show Advally ads in, picks every forum, only the forums you choose, or every forum except the ones you choose. Outside that choice, a page loads no Advally ad slots and no Advally scripts: no rules.js, no Google Publisher Tag, no Prebid and no malvertising guard. Another partner's ads run there on their own.

What you will see

Under Options > Advally - Advertising, three settings follow Enable Advally Ads:

• Show Advally ads in: Every forum (the default), Only the forums picked below, or Every forum except the ones picked below.
• Forums: the forums that setting includes or leaves out. Picking a forum includes the forums inside it.
• Show Advally ads on pages outside any forum: the home page, search, members and other pages that do not belong to a forum. Off by default, and used only when Advally is limited to some forums.

A thread page follows its forum. Until you change Show Advally ads in, nothing changes.

What the upgrade does to your database

Adds the three options above with their phrases, one code event listener (templater_global_data), and a small change to the Advally_Advertising_Ads template. No table changes.

Turning it off

Set Show Advally ads in back to Every forum and save.

Why upgrade

• TARS can see the page you're on. Each question to TARS carries what the page loaded: the browser console, requests that failed, requests to ad companies, the Google ad slots and what filled them, Prebid bids, and the HTML of the ad spots. Ask why the ads look off, or why something errors, and he answers from the page itself.
• TARS knows when a report went in. After you say yes and the report is sent, TARS can give you its number instead of saying nothing was filed.

What you will see

• No change on screen. TARS's answers about ads, errors and requests name what he saw on the page.
• Members who have TARS but not Bug Report now load the small page recorder that Bug Report members already had, so TARS has a console to read.

TARS reads the page only when the member asks him something. The snapshot never includes posts, conversations or anything typed into a form, and it can't see inside another company's ad frame.

Why upgrade

• A feed of threads with photos, for video players. /advally-photo-feed/ serves RSS of the 30 newest threads whose first post has a photo, with that photo on every item. Video builders such as Connatix Discovery need an image on every item. The stock forum feed carried one on 2 of 20 items on Toyota 4Runner and 12 of 40 on Audizine.

What you will see

Nothing changes for readers. The new address answers with RSS. Each item names its photo three ways: an enclosure, a media:content tag, and an image at the top of the description.

A photo is an image attachment of at least 400 by 225 pixels that a guest can open, or an [IMG] with a full https address. Smilies, emoji and GIFs are skipped, and so is a picture a newer item already carries (a sponsor banner repeated across threads, or the same file uploaded again). A thread posted again by the same member under the same title, such as one vendor post in every model forum, is listed once. The feed lists only threads a guest can read and is rebuilt at most every 15 minutes.

What is not changed

The stock forum feeds (/forums/-/index.rss and each forum's own) are as before.

What the upgrade does to your database

Adds one public route, advally-photo-feed. No option, table or template changes. The feed's 15-minute copy is kept in the data registry under advallyPhotoFeed.

Why upgrade

• Old http:// images in posts no longer make thread pages mixed content. An image a member embedded as http:// (most often http://i.imgur.com/...) is now shown with an https:// address. Site audits such as Ahrefs flag a thread page that loads an http image on an https page. That flag was on about 2,400 thread pages across Audizine, AudioKarma and Toyota 4Runner.

What you will see

Nothing changes for readers. Chrome, Firefox and Safari already load these images over https. The image's address in the page source now starts with https://. Image sizes, the lightbox and the image proxy setting behave as before.

What is not changed

Stored posts, [URL] links, link previews, email and the API keep the address exactly as the member wrote it. Only [IMG] output on a board served over https is rewritten. An address with a username or a port other than 80 is left alone.

What the upgrade does to your database

Adds one option, Render http:// images in posts as https (Options > Advally - WebOps), on by default, with its two phrases. No table or template changes.

Turning it off

Untick Render http:// images in posts as https and save. Images then show exactly as written, and the rest of the add-on keeps running.

Why upgrade

• TARS knows which page you have open. A question asked from the TARS panel now carries the address and title of the page it was asked on, so he answers about that page instead of asking which one you mean. A ticket he files names the page too.
• The "look for an email" line shows the exact subject. A subject containing $' or $$ was garbled in the line that tells a member which email to reply to. It now shows as written.

What you will see

• Ask TARS "what is wrong with this page?" on a thread: he answers about that thread.
• After a bug report, the line naming the email to look for matches the email's subject character for character.

What TARS is sent

The page address and title, only from the front-end panel. XenForo's security token is removed from the address before it leaves your forum. The admin hub sends no page.

• TARS sounds like himself. Four of his lines now follow his written voice: the panel header calls him Advally's account manager for your site, his greeting offers what he can see from the board (the site, its ads.txt and its health), the chat box reads "Ask me anything about the site.", and his opening line names Mr. Bishop as Advally's founder, so members outside Newschoolers know who he means. He no longer tells anyone his honesty is at 90%: with a client, everything he says is true.

What you will see

• The TARS panel header: "Advally's account manager for" your site, instead of "Advally's assistant for".
• TARS's greeting: "Ask me anything about the site, its ads.txt or its health."
• The TARS chat box placeholder: "Ask me anything about the site."
• For a member who also has Bug Report, TARS's second opening line ends "Years of working for Mr. Bishop, Advally's founder, have prepared me for this."

TARS's answers follow the same voice from advally.com, with no plugin change.

• Opening TARS's chat no longer freezes the page's scrolling. When the chat opened, the page under it ignored the mouse wheel and trackpad for about 4 to 5 seconds on a typical thread, longer on a long page. The page now scrolls normally the whole time the chat is open.

What you will see

• Open TARS and scroll the page straight away: it moves.
• The Bug Report form still keeps the page still for the second or two it takes the screenshot, as before. The form covers the page, so nothing changes there.

Why upgrade

• TARS and Bug Report are two separate features, and you choose who gets each. TARS is Advally's account manager for your site: members you pick can ask him about the site, its ads and its health, or tell him about a problem. Bug Report is the one-click button that sends Advally a screenshot of the page with the browser details. The option page now names both plainly, each with its own list of user groups.
• TARS has some personality. He greets people as Advally's account manager, with his humour set to 60% and his honesty at 90%. A fuller voice follows in a later release.

What you will see

• A member in the TARS list only gets a TARS button that opens the chat.
• A member in the Bug Report list only gets the Bug Report button, as before.
• A member in both lists gets one button with two choices: ask TARS, or report a bug.

TARS answers questions once advally.com's matching change is live. Until then he takes problem reports, as in 4.2.16.

Why upgrade

• Every bug report becomes an email you can reply to. A report sent from the Bug Report form or through TARS now goes to Advally as an email conversation with the member who sent it. They get an email with their own words, and replying to it adds to the report. Advally's team answers them in the same thread.
• The member is told which email to look for. After sending, the form and the TARS panel show the email's subject and the address it comes from, for example: Look for an email from [email protected] titled "Your Advally report: Reply button does nothing". Reply to it to add anything.

Reports from TARS already sent the member a copy. From 4.2.16 every report from a signed-in member does, wherever it was sent from.

What you will see

Nothing changes in how the form or TARS looks until a report is sent. The sent message then carries one more line naming the email. If advally.com could not send that email, for example because a member reached the daily limit of 20 report emails, the report still reaches Advally and the line does not appear.

The email goes to the address on the member's account on your forum. It is read on your server, never from the browser.
